I have to admit, I've been a little sluggish getting back into the swing of doing anything productive since graduation. While the internet used to resonate as a guilty pleasure for procrastination amidst my school work, it has to some degree lost its addictive magnetism now that I only have to do what I want to do. But I do want to post on Vox, so never fear. I'll be here.
Chico's been busy working as a production assistant for the Fi Fi awards, a three day gig that he has to work from 5pm and 5am. Meanwhile, the house cat Kitten keeps me company, and I've managed to make my way out to the world on my own now that I have my own set of apartment keys. Last night I attended a preview screening of a documentary about Blipfest with my friend Analog Pigin, followed with a tasty dinner at La Esquina and a few beers at a bar where I coincidentally ran into four Vassar friends. Ian gave me two graduation gifts; Haruki Murakami's new book After Dark, and the Pupshaw and Pushpaw Vinyl figurines that I've been longing to own for a year or so now ever since I read The Frank Book.
Today? Some reading, catching up on internets. Archiving animated .gif's I've started to collect. Cleaning. Maybe groceries. Beta testing a super secret game! Toys 'r' Us is only a few blocks away and I'm tempted to walk on by and pick myself up a new DS game. Any suggestions? Pokemon perhaps?
This weekend I decided to give my Dad an overview of the web 2.0
world. I started by a thorough explanation of blogs and
what they've traditionally been used for, then proceeded to outline the
most prevelent online social spheres in this day and age. I
started with MySpace (Lvl. -3), proceeded to Facebook (Lvl. 7), and ended with
Vox (Lvl. 10). After our discussion in the car, he wasn't quite clear how
Vox would be different than the other blogs he had seen, but when I
lead him through the interface and showed him my blog, he was pretty
damned impressed. Just thought I'd share.
I started A Wild Sheep Chase by Haruki Murakami. I wasn't lying when I said I
wanted to read more! Murakami's imagery is perfect. I plan to read a quarter more before I head to bed, so I have bizarre and colorful dreams. On the back of the book is a great photo of Murakami in a T-Shirt holding a tiny white cat. I can't remember if it was the name of his white cat or the one from his other novel
Norwegian Wood, but I remember
my Japanese professor mentioning something about a cat named
Seagull. I have a black cat, Cloe, but if I ever get a white cat
Seagull is certainly in top running for its name.
Wow, Aeon Flux on MTV2. None of that Charlize Theron poppycock. The real deal.
Tonight I read more, played Literati with
Chico, and worked on some more character designs. I worked on
Monseiur Monkey Show (seen below) for Mojizu, and apparently Cooky Bear
is in the running for a contest. I have to have the most popular
character out of the 80 'hot' moji's in order to advance to the next
round, so I'm not expecting too much. But it's pretty cool
I guess.
I woke up this morning to find an average-sized buck outside of my window. He was just meandering around and was relatively close to my window, so I snapped a photo of him before he jumped away. He showed up four separate times later on in the afternoon. Chico and I decided that its name was Bort the Buck, and it may be a peeping-tom Deer-bot out to spy on me. Tricky stuff.
Today was all around family fun. It's nice to have a family that has matured quite a bit over the years (as have I, naturally). We all get along a lot better, and whenever we have the free time to share meals or do things
together we have a lot of fun. Today was the first time I had a full-fledged family meal. My brother has constantly been out working on his senior film, so we all headed over to a tiny cafe and had lunch, followed by many photos (my dad is quite the shutterbug too). I went lap swimming for the first time in ages with my Dad, and had pizza on the patio with my grandparents. Finally, Harrison and Stephanie and I all went to Safeway and picked up ye good ol' Funfetti cake mix and frosting. Funfetti is the best insta-cake ever, hands down.
I also managed to get out Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris and start to read it again. Sedaris visited us at my college and was as wonderfully entertaining as a speaker as he is a writer. He is going to release a twisted children's book later this year I believe, and it sounds like its going to be fantastic.
After I put it down for the afternoon, I got really excited as I thought 'Hey! Now I can put a book on my blog! This is great!'. Et voila, it is here. I began to think of more fun books that I should read, and found some literature at my local library on Japanese Pop Culture that I'm going to dive into, plus a few more novels by the incredible Japanese writer Haruki Murakami.I started to think, maybe VOX will not only offer the interface that engages users to excitedly write and share, but with the additional media features, it could also engage users to listen to more music and read more books (something, that i'm almost sure most blog or cmc sites don't even begin to consider to attempt). Its effect has tightly grasped hold of me, that's for certain.
Time for cake and a massive review of video game trailers (aka wii and ps3 sneak peeks with the lil sis and bro)! Cheers!
