top.friends.with.marriage.

Since first meeting Dan and off-handedly insulting his Castle Crasher figurines for including what I thought was a pizzacutter (which actually turned out to be a mace), we have become pretty close friends. This is demonstrated by the fact that we're top friends (on Myspace, of COURSE), but also from the one time we were chilling in the Hyatt hotel lobby during GDC and a drunk passerby asked if we were married. Hence the title: Top Friends with Marriage (we are not actually married, silly).

Dan means a lot more to me than MySpace or fake marriages, however, and a few months ago when he and the rest of The Behemoth team were up here for GDC and Wondercon, we hung out a lot and drew pictures together, one of which is displayed above. To commemorate our long-distant, convention-fueled friendship, I decided to turn this drawing into the following plush duo:

Tricks!

Like friendship lockets (only not nearly as archaic), I will keep the large monster for myself while he will keep the smaller one. Both guys were hand sewn using fleece for the body parts and felt as the details. My next project? Still working on Tako King for my friend Hamza... should be a tricky one.

micromusic.sf.launch.party.

With my gang of resident nerdfolk in tow (Jared, Hamza, Ben, Matt, Andrew, and born-again nerd Kat), yesterday evening I made it out to the Micromusic SF Launch party at Mighty. Micromusic.net, self described as "low tech music for high tech people", is a chiptunes collective supporting music and performances worldwide. With hope, the concert last night was the beginning of what could be the beginning of a San Francisco chiptunes presence.

Colors

The performance included a hefty handful of artists, each uniquely devising the color of their work with loving limitations given the use of such devices as Gameboys or the classic NES to compose their tracks. We caught the full set list of Trash80's fantastic debut appearance in SF, as well as the following acts by the renowned Nullsleep and Chibi-Tech which were equally as great.

My posse was in full-fledged dance mode for the entire concert. While the crowd was not as overwhelming as the scene found at Blipfest, the energy was still vibrant and masterfully orchestrated by the artists who played.

some.things.from.seattle.

This past weekend I impulsively booked a flight to Seattle after hearing word that my old room mates were having a housewarming party for their new place. With the Spring getting peppered with plans already, I figured this was a good time for me to escape before I got too preoccupied, and of course I miss my good friends very much. Went to a tea house and played scrabble, adventured around the Locks, took a bus downtown to meet an old friend, and spent Sunday evening listening to Gregorian chant in St. Mark's Cathedral. We made several group meals and sat around the fire listening to music and munching on cookies. Just like the old days.

The house warming party was relatively successful, a good first attempt to celebrate while learning lessons about how to craft the ideal party. This included the post-realization that it's never good when there are weird 'Randoes' aka 'Randoms' are strolling around your domicile making your party sketchy. I was approached by one of these wild Randoes, he gesturing to sit next to me in his leather bomber jack and pronounced faux hawk. What was to follow was one of the worst efforts of someone trying to hit on me I could think of. Or at least, one of the most uncreative ways:

FAUX HAWK grins at me and opens the laptop. Goes directly to MySpace and then angles the keyboard at me.

FAUX HAWK: Search for yourself on MySpace!

ME: Ugh... okay...

FAUX HAWK glances over my shoulder to see what my name was. Whiplashes around sharply at sight of my last name:

FAUX HAWK: Woooooahhhhh. You'e CHINESE?

ME: Ugh... yeah. Pointing at screen. There. That's me.

FAUX HAWK: Clicks on the Add button. Heh. Nice to meet you Tiffany. Awesome. Now we're friends on MySpace.

ME: Right.

At this point FAUX HAWK continues sporting a goofy grin and has the nerve to put his arm around me and position his digital camera for a MySpace picture. In case I didn't pick up on it, he made sure that I understood that this photo would be 'For our Myspaces'. Let it be known that at this point we still haven't talked about jack shit.

ME: Feeling trapped, time for awkward escape! Uhm, okay, well I'm gonna go downstairs.

FAUX HAWK: Oh cool! Well, talk to you later then because you seem cool.

So maybe I missed the memo that requesting to immediately add the hot pick-up that you just met to your online social scene before even making effort to really introduce yourself is the new way to go these days. Of course, in the end I had the pleasure to opt out of any continued connection between 20 yr old 'Tai. K.' from Seattle, but in the future I'd like to wholly discourage that anyone use this method as a means of 'meeting people'. It's just no good.
