Did you dress up today? See any good costumes?

Just 30 minutes ago we had a load of little kids run around from town house to town house. Me and my housemates sat outside and gave them candy. My favorites were a little kid dressed up like a member of the Blue Man Group (blue face, blue swimcap, and drum on his belly) and a Professor dressed up like Clint Eastwood. Because my digi cam is in the shop (booooo.) I was using an old fashioned box camera. I snapped a pic of this little kid in a bug suit, who came running towards me after the flash went off and was searching around to see the digital thumbnail of the picture I took. I couldn't believe it, at that point, I must have seemed so out of touch with technology to that kid. Weird Science.

I've been talking heads off about my Tobias costume, which is being saved for the big Halloween Party on Saturday. Tonight, however, I have my one class from 6:30-9:30, in which I will be dressing up as a bear. Not very creative or anything, but something, I suppose.

So tonight there is this big Halloween party being put on by my school's independent radio station, featuring a collective of Indie and Japanese pop/rock bands:

Has anyone heard of these bands before? And if so, would the concert be worth going to? (I have a lot of work tonight, so I'm trying to organize my time wisely!)

So, I ended up attending the concert for the first half of the set, catching the end of Henry Tennis and purchasing their CD after listening to some of their music before hand. One of the members sold it to me directly, and thanked me for coming out to see them. Apparently they had come out to perform a single show somewhere else on the east coast, and came to play at our school for free, and are heading back to Japan soon.

Next came Animental. Not good. I appreciate the fact that there is a trio of girls trying to make their way into the grunge/indie/rock movement, but they really need to learn how to play their instruments better. I don't mean to be cruel, but they came off as really inexperienced and as though they relied on their performance/dance pieces to support their hipster cred.

Finally, ZOoOoOm came to the stage with an incredible performance. I'm not well versed in genre music talk, so I cannot really explain what genre they fell under extactly. But I can say that the entire performance was an incredible Rollercoaster. With two sets of drums and a wicked guitarist, the 30 minute set never stopped. You could see the sweat dripping from the guiarist's finger tips. I wish I had picked up their album, but perhaps sometime when I get to Japan I will find them and purchase it then.

lupe.fiasco.

The upcoming weekend has the potential to become one of the best weekends evar. The Halloween party, the biggest party on campus, is happening on Saturday. Yes, its after Halloween, which is lame. But do you know whats best? Dressing up as Tobias Fünke and becoming one of the most terrifying creatures walking the school grounds.

But cooler yet, I'm seing Lupe Fiasco on Friday. Hip hop don't stop. I'll be bumping on the dancefloor like its nobody's business. Check out Lupe's track 'Daydreamin', it's the flow-diggity.

As for now, I better reagain my sanity, nap up, and get ready for Halloween themed Trivia Night at my campus' bar. Yessir.

art.field.trip!

Today I had the fortunate opportunity to go on a gallery visiting field trip with my painting class today. We all met in Williamsburg to visit my professor's art studio first. I am just beginning to explore the wide variety of sectors in the city and Williamsburg seemed very much like a hipster neighborhood with plenty of vintage clothing stores, tiny cafés, and used book venders for everyone. I do want to go back and walk around it some more.

Anyway, we visited quite a few galleries, both in Williamsburg, around NYU, and in Chealsea and saw a large body of work. I really enjoy going to galleries because they inspire me to do more art and give my eyes visual experience. The artists below were my favorites of what I saw today:

What did you think you would never ever do... but did?

When I was in middle school, I really despised the blonde girls who dominated the popular crowd. They made my life miserable, and since I was a frizzy haired brunette at the time, I figured I'd take my anger out on the fact that I was better than them because I would never be a blonde.

Well that changed. I've been a blonde for almost 5 years now, to the point where I don't really even remember what color my hair is naturally. My Mom is a blonde and I have light eyebrows, so I've been able to pull it off pretty well. It's set up some interesting encounters with some persons, particularly those who won't believe I'm part Chinese, those who think I'm Russian, or those who perceive me as a superficial, blonde in-girl (like the ones I used to despise) before even meeting me. In that respect however, I have found it an exciting challenge to defeat the stereotype. Plus, being a blonde, hapa girl with a knack for video games and a love for nerd culture can be a perfect combo conversation topic when seeking out nerdy boys to have crushes on (aka my boyfriend).

But all that aside, I want to dye it back brown. I almost did it this summer, but only backed out because it was too late to schedule a dye-ing appointment with this place in NYC, and since havn't had time to think about it. At this point, I'll most likely go back to my roots when I graduate. I'm tossing around the idea of cutting it real short and sporting a Faux Hawk for a little while cause I think they're way hot. But I'll have to wait and see how I feel.

Night Ripper

Girl Talk is the hottest popular culture overload to date. Its just so meta. Girls love it. Boys love it. College kids love it. Hipsters love it. And I think its about time voxers get a taste too. You may find it a bit overwhelming at first, your aural senses bombarded with switching beats and overlapping lyrics that visit your most expansive adventures in pop music. Sometimes you'll get lost, and wonder where you started from. But then, mixed beats like Ying Yang Twin's 'Whisper Song' pulse behind the sensitive melody of The Verve's 'Bittersweet Symphony' and you'll notice that everything is in its place again.

Harold, just blogged about it, including the album Night Ripper's first track. I'm going to go ahead and post the third track, 'Hold Up' for your listening pleasure. If you want to map out my favorite moments, key into the track at 0:42, 1:45, and 2:28 for some delicious mix-up moments.

Noodle

I bought a new toy today from Kid Robot. I purchased the just released figurine of Noodle from Gorillaz, one of my most favorite cartoon characters ever. She's small and hardcore and kawaii at the same time. It was a great purchase, and I got a sweet bag. We'll call it an early birthday gift to myself. Fair enough, right?

I returned from my 3 hour seminar to find my housemates all collected in the swanky living room on my floor. I was greeted by baked goods, wonderful music, intense music, and drew on giant playing cards during comfortable conversation. The night was complete by a group viewing of The Big Lebowski.

All is well.

p.s. After an exciting discussion with my fellow housemates about halloween potentials, for a brief moment my mates decided that they'd all dress up like other Arrested Development characters to compliment my Lucille Bluth idea. Then came around the alternative, in which we would all buy bald caps, cut off shorts, and put hair on our chests and walk around as a team of Tobias Fünke's. What do you think?

A few sketches from this afternoon. I just happen to be working on self-portrait studies for one of my art classes. I used my webcam for a remediatized version of a mirror. All of the drawings are mechanical pencil and sharpie on paper. Snazzy!
