The rampant glee I felt while taking AP Biology in high school lead me to believe for a moment in time that it was my destiny to be a Botanist. I was well-equipped with all the course requirements in the advanced sciences and there seemed nothing more exciting at the time than eying over the lovely scientific illustrations demonstrating plant reproduction. Believe it or not, fantasies of tending greenhouse rarities and dyeing plant cross-sections with iodine motivated my career goals as I headed into freshman year at Vassar.
That moment was fleeting and brief. I ended up trading Botanist aspirations for Broadway Actress/Child Psychiatrist, to Graphic Designer/Media Theorist, to finally youngin' with no mind about what she should be doing in life. Typical, I suppose. After all that however I still get giddy at the close examination of fascinating plant life, particularly the carnivorous variety. Yesterday
Garth drove
Nick,
Becca,
Sarah, and I up to Sebastopol where
California Carnivores, the largest carnivorous plant shop in the country, resides. While a majority of the species were dormant for the winter season, not only did I get a couple of great photos but we also got to observe a live pitcher
plant autopsy which revealed a tube full of nasty digested bugs! Gross!
